Key data for a successful ecological transition.
A large-scale Land Use Land Cover (LULC) referential database describes territories in a comprehensive and highly detailed way. The data, in vector format, are geo-located and cross the dimensions of both land use and land cover with metric precision. The information stored in the database meets strict quality standards. It gives an overview of a territory at a specific moment in time, allowing to measure its evolution over time.
A LULC database can therefore be a useful tool at the service of ecological transition, serving as a repository of key data to produce monitoring indicators, particularly in terms of soil artificialization.
In addition, such a database is essential for defining and evaluating land use planning policies, making this tool useful for both national governments and local authorities. The database can be used in a Geographic Information System (GIS) from the local to the national level.
A precise LULC database in transition zones (such as building sites, new housing developments, etc.) allows you to analyze the evolution of land artificialization on an annual cycle - a major factor in terms of monitoring sustainable development in your territory.
Evolution indicators, such as urban sprawl, agricultural decline, rural urbanization, and soil impermeabilization, are key elements in facilitating a better understanding of landscape and biodiversity changes in your territory.
Identifying industrial wastelands or “empty spaces” in the urban landscape from aerial or satellite images enables you to start thinking of solutions for the development of these lands – think, for example, on installing solar panel parks.
We combine technical excellence with human expertise in our LULC services. While automatic processing, using artificial intelligence (AI), enables the capturing of large data volumes, photo interpretation remains the core of our approach. One of our key strengths lies within our teams of experienced technicians.
We use state-of-the-art technical means (both hardware and software) and develop a specific work environment for each project, from training to data control. Our teams use both data entry tools and tools for geometric and topological validation, which are calibrated to the specifications of the data to be produced. To encourage, and shape, technical exchanges with our customers, we set up a Q&A system. In addition, we communicate on regular milestones within the project.
Throughout our entire production process, we put quality at the center of our concerns, applying international standards for the qualification of geographic data quality (ISO 19157 standard). Our quality assurance team works independent from the production team and any rejected data, upon their control, are reworked before delivery.
We produce a sample to specify client needs and develop the solutions to meet those needs.
We produce your LULC database at an adequate production rate and closely monitor the progress. We adapt to potential constraints and control deadlines.
We keep your LULC database up-to-date by updating the produced data in the database according to different vintages, allowing you to monitor and measure the evolution of your territories over time.

Our solution complies with all the requirements for the production of a large-scale LULC database. Avineon’s effective project management methodology combines a team of experienced photo interpreters with an independent quality assurance team. This success formula has already proven Avineon’s ability to produce large volumes of data, in full compliance with quality standards, within short timeframes.
We ensure a close and open communication within the project, allowing you to follow the production schedule and quality. Our project organization and methodology allow for a high level of responsiveness – quickly adapting to events that arise during the project. Our close project monitoring, linked to our production resources, is one of our key assets to meet your deadlines. We offer, in addition, a one-year warranty on all our deliverables.
Each year, we cover tens of thousands of square kilometers. Our data entry teams, and control operators, are supervised by experienced team leaders, with a minimum of seven years of experience on various photo interpretation projects.
The quality assurance (QA) team works independent from the production team. The QA-team develops a rigid control process that is based on, and tailored to, customer requirements. Only data validated by the QA-team is delivered to our customers. Data that does not meet your requirements goes back into the production process for correction and re-inspection.
To drive our projects, we use the PMBOK/Prince2 methodologies in combination with Agile approaches. Close communication with our customers, and close monitoring of production, are the keys to the success of our projects.
Avineon can process several thousands of square kilometers per month and has already done this in past LULC projects and other photo interpretation projects.
The data produced by Avineon can be delivered on physical media (like hard disks and USB sticks) or in a digitized format (download link, direct access to our SFTP servers). The data is accompanied by reports that describe the content of the deliverables. Internal control reports can be delivered upon client request.
In this guide (PDF) we explain how Avineon can help to improve your business by visualizing your systems, assets, and data.
